# About the app

> What Kombrewcha does, who it is for, what it costs, and which platforms it runs on, in plain sentences.

Kombrewcha is a mobile app for learning to make kombucha at home and keeping a record of every
brew. It runs on iPhone and Android. It is bought once on the App Store or Google Play, with no
subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads.

## What the app does

A kombucha batch runs in two stages, and the app tracks both the same way.

The **SCOBY brew** is the first stage: a culture works on sweetened tea at room temperature until
it tastes tart rather than sweet. Seven to fourteen days is typical.

The **flavor run** is the second: the kombucha is bottled with fruit, herbs or spice, which is
where carbonation comes from. Two to five days is typical, and it is short on purpose, because
sealed bottles left too long can burst.

### How a batch runs in the app

**Day 0.** We pick the stage and a duration, pre-filled from a researched suggestion, and log the
tea, sugar and starter liquid as they go into the jar. A reminder is set for the ready date.

**While it ferments.** A ring counts the days remaining rather than the days gone. The jar sits
and the number drops. Nothing has to be kept in our heads.

**The ready date.** A reminder arrives. From there it is our call: pull it now, or give it two
more days and see where the tartness lands.

**Afterwards.** Tasting notes and a rating close the batch out, and it can be saved to the recipe
book. Next time around, the amounts and the duration that worked are already filled in.

## What else is in it

The **recipe book** holds the recipes we have written down, shelved alongside the kombucha recipes
that ship with the app. Any batch can be saved as a recipe, and any recipe can start a new batch
with the amounts already filled in.

The **Learn** section is a library of short articles on brewing kombucha: what a SCOBY is doing,
which ratios work, how to bottle a flavor run, how to identify mold, what a slow ferment means.
Safety is the first thing in the app and stays one tap away. All of it reads with no connection.

The **community feed** is where a recipe can be published under a handle, and where other brewers'
recipes can be browsed and rated. Publishing is optional and nothing is published unless we choose
to publish it.

## Who it is for

Anyone brewing kombucha at home, whether this is a first jar or the fiftieth. The writing is meant
to be read at the counter with a jar in front of us: clear enough for a first batch, and accurate
enough that an experienced brewer is not talked down to.

## What it costs

One purchase on the App Store or Google Play, and that is the whole transaction. There is no
subscription, no in-app purchase, no free tier, and nothing held back for a higher plan. Every
future update to the app is included. The current price is shown on the store listing.

## Privacy

There is no email address, no password and no profile, because there is nothing to log in to.
Batches, recipes, notes and ratings are stored on the device. We run no analytics and no tracking,
and there are no third-party SDKs or advertising identifiers in the app.

Brewing works entirely offline. Sharing is the only part that reaches our server: a recipe when
one is published, and the brewer name it is published under, which is registered so that no two
brewers share a name. Nothing else is sent, and nothing is published unless we publish it. The
[privacy policy](/privacy) has the detail.

## What the app does not do

Kombrewcha cannot inspect a jar, and it does not judge whether a batch is safe to drink. The safety
section states what to check before drinking a batch, including how to identify mold and when to
discard one. That judgment is ours.

Kombrewcha is software for tracking and learning home brewing. It makes no health or medical
claims.
